| Will Cooper Takes Gogs Title! |
Congratulations to Will Cooper from Woburn who won the Gogs Junior Masters at Gog Magog Golf Club on October 31st. The tournament is part of a series run by the Golf Society of Great Britain for Under 14''s on the day.
Will, who was a regular player in the BB&O Under 14 Squad in 2008, fired a 2 over par to take the title.
Well done to Will who has had a very good season overall.

| U13/12 vs County Girls |
28/9/2008 Hazlemere Golf Club
On a sunny day with some very fast greens the U13/12s BB&O boys played a representative Girls side from the three Lady Unions. The game was played in excellent spirit and some great golf was seen from both sides. This was the first of these matches and hopefully will become a regular fixture. After a very close match the boys gained an excellent win against a strong girls squad 5-4.

| Junior Manager Vacancy |
The BB&O Junior Management team is hoping to recruit a new Junior Manager following the resignation of Mike Styrka, the present U12 Manager, who has been in the role for some five years. We hope to attract a keen supporter of Junior Golf, someone who can spend time organising and supervising matches and coaching sessions. A person who is willing and able to be part of the strategic and tactical decision making forum. Someone, male or female, who can devote up to 10 odd days a year supporting County Juniors. We pay all expenses and will provide County Clothing. However the biggest reward must be seen to be as part of one of the most admired Counties in England. We will also provide training to get you up to speed with the latest Child Protection issues and give assistance in you becoming a recognised Level 1 PGA coach. Please apply by entering the BB&O Junior website and clicking on the contact button and sending your message to Jan Hubrecht, or by phoning Jan Hubrecht, BB&O Junior Manager, on 07711 433428.

| Open Days update |
| The recently staged open days were a huge success again with about 100 boys and girls attending the sessions at the three venues. So successful have they been so good was the talent that it will take us longer than anticipated to report back to individual participants. We aim to do this by early November. Thank you for your patience. |
| BB&O v Sussex Under 18s at Crews Hill |
| Dean Newbold (Frilford Heath) and Steven O'Connor (Tadmarton Heath) were the only winners for BB&O in the morning foursomes in which Sussex led by 4 points to 1. In the afternoon singles Chris Whelehan (West Berkshire), Steven O'Connor and James Bromham (Richings Park) all lost very close matches on the eighteenth whilst Michael Johnson (Maidenhead) came tantalisingly close to a win on the last green but secured a half. Victories by James Brockington (Henley) and James Tobia (Woburn) made the final score line a little less embarrassing - a loss by 11.5 to 3.5 points should not overshadow the fact that the BB&O boys left with their heads held high having behaved impeccably on and off the golf course. |

| BB&O v Middlesex Under 18s at Crews Hill |
Dean Newbold (Frilford Heath) and Steven O'Connor (Tadmarton Heath) were the only winners for BB & O in the morning foursomes which Middlesex won by 3.5 points to 1.5.
The afternoon singles saw a spirited fight by BB&O but the margins of victories in every match really meant that the overall result was a foregone conclusion at the turn. Nevertheless there were some good victories by Chris Whelehan (West Berkshire), the Frilford pair of Dean Newbold and George Munsey, James Bromham (Richings Park) and team captain James Tobia of Woburn.
Final result was a win for Middlesex by 8.5 to 6.5. |

| BB&O v Surrey Under 16s at Huntercombe |
on August 26th 2008
The Mortimer Ubiquitous Golf Society (MUGS) hosted this event for the fifteenth consecutive year and, with home advantage, BB & O raced to an early lead in most of the foursomes and maintained that lead to lunch with what seemed like a comfortable advantage. However, a spirited fight back by Surrey in the afternoon singles clearly showed that the advantage was not comfortable.
Jordan Mann (Sand Martins) and George Abbott (The Oxfordshire) both held comfortable leads in their singles matches but, in every other match, BB & O could easily have lost. A trip up the eighteenth for Jake Canning (Stoke Park), Findlay Ingram (Calcot Park) and George Munsey (Frilford Heath) saw a return of two and a half points which secured victory for BB & O when Jordan Mann and George Abbott secured early victories. The final match, which looked like it could be the decider, ended as a half when James Foster (Newbury & Crookham) won the hole with a solid par.
The result of these matches over the past fifteen years is BB&O 8, Surrey 7 |

| Smith leads BB&O to 4somes victory at the Warren |
| The EGU SE group Foursomes took place at the Warren this August and having come third in this event last year the BB&O boys took the title for the first time since 1989 when Rob Watts and Jason Brant, now both County coaches, were part of that winning team. Taking an early lead after the first morning with a perfect 4 points, the boys repeated that performance in the afternoon and again the next morning thus going into the final afternoon's play 4 points ahead ahead of 2nd placed Sussex. Playing Kent and Surrey in that round, both of whom had to fight back to avoid possible relegation, the matches were never going to be easy. In the end Kent beat our boys, the only County to do so and we made a stunning 18th hole, last chip, final putt recovery to win our match against Surrey! The final result showed us to have earned a total of 14 match points out of a possible 16! Captain Max Smith led the team of Sandy Bolton, James Brockington, Jake Canning, Ben Cotton, Tyrrell Hatton and Oli Tite. All boys played fabulous golf, working hard throughout and on many occasions staging great fight backs. |

| Hatton's Faldo Win at Walton Heath |
| Tyrrell Hatton equalled the course record at Walton Heath in his morning round with a fabulous 66 and then followed it up with a superb 68 in the afternoon to win the regional Faldo Finals with a perfect 10 under. He will now go to Brazil to play his next round. Well done Tyrrell |

| Munsey takes the Gold Medal |
| Fifteen year old George Munsey (Frilford Heath) wins the Gold Medal at Woodhall Spa. Played on the Bracken Course George put together two good rounds of 34 and 38 to win the prize by one shot from his two nearest rivals. Played under difficult conditions, the first day's 34 left him in eleventh position but conditions improved on the second day and George shot a 38 which was equalled by one other player. He is the third successive teenager to win this major handicap tournament. For picture and David Hamilton's report please go to www.englishgolfunion.org |

| Home Counties Final League Match |
On August 12th the team visited North Middlesex Golf Club for the final match of the Home Counties series. The course was in excellent condition with some tricky holes to negotiate.
With two of the squad playing at the Reid Trophy we made some changes to the team at a blustery day with newcomers Declan Duffy and Josh Brass making their debut.
After the foursome we were level with Bedfordshire and trailing Middlesex by 2 points. Everybody scored at least a half and this proved to be important later in the match. Luke Fitzpatrick and Alex Bruce worked hard for a win with a fine disciplined display on the par 3 9th.
In the afternoon singles our top three of Alfie Bull, Jordan Williams and Ben Beach made a clean sweep and gave a firm foundation for the rest of the team. Excellent contributions also from Joe Townsend, Curtis MacGeever, Declan Duffy and David Langley confirmed a good win against Beds and a draw with Middlesex.
Well done to all the players who represented the Under 14s this season. Photo to follow.

| Triangular Victory! |
The Under 14s travelled to Hartley Wintney for the annual triangular tournament against Hampshire and Wiltshire.
In difficult conditions more similar to autumn than mid summer the team gave an excellent display beating both Counties and winning the tournament outright.
The whole team played an important part and fought their matches all the way through with some players gaining extra points on the last. There were some excellent performances on the final hole and some fine putting to close out matches. Lyle Phillips finished off with a 25 footer on the seventeenth to complete a double victory and Jordan Williams followed his example. The other team members scoring maximum points were Luke Fitzpatrick and David Langley who also won both their matches before the eighteenth. Individual results can be found on the 'Results' tab under 'Match Results'. |
| Under 14's v Herts and Beds |
The team played the second match of the season at home to another strong Herts side and a good team from Beds.
The morning foursomes saw us earn a decisive win against Beds 5-0 but a lack of concentration on the last holes left us trailing Herts 1-4.
We carried on the good performance in the afternoon against Beds with a fine 8-2 victory in the singles but the deficit on Herts was too much to make up and we lost to them.
Every member of the team scored points on the day and what was particularly pleasing was that some of the players who had difficult results in the previous singles came back to take maximum points. Well done to Christian Vollaire and Curtis MacGeever for showing character and doing just that and also to Will Cooper and Lyle Phillips for their two foursomes victories. Congratulations also to Jordan Williams and David Langley who made their debut for the team with two excellent singles victories and a point each in the foursomes. Result: BB&O 5½; Herts 9½; BB&O 13 Beds 2 |

| Pepperell bows out of last 16 in English Amateur |
| Eddie did not make it to the last 8 having lost to Chris Paisley (Stocksfield) in the 3rd round. He produced the 7th best score in the two rounds of stroke play (out of 288) and played well in the match play stages beating Jonathan Gidney (Church Stretton) 5&3 and Billy Fowles (Wentworth) 4&3 in the first two rounds. Five up with 9 to play in the 3rd round and Paisley stepped up several gears to produce 5 birdies and an eagle in the last 9 holes to go all square at the 18th. His 15 footer for an Eagle on the 18th against Eddie's birdie resulted in the play off as the heavens opened and the first extra hole was halved in four. On the 442 uphill second Pepperell put his drive in the fairway trap. He came out well but short of the green and with an excellent chip and a good putt made his four. His opponents then produced another birdie to win the match on the 20th! |
| Under 14s v Herts and Middlesex |
On July 29th the team travelled to Aldenham, and despite two defeats by strong Herts and Middlesex teams the BB&O boys showed some excellent promise for the coming years. For most players this was their County debut and they handled themselves very well both on and off the course. Everyone enjoyed themselves and were very tired at the end of the day but were all a great credit to the County. Congratulations to Joe Townsend who won both his foursomes and both his singles to gain maximum points and against players whose handicaps were all considerably lower. Well done also to the team Captain - Alfie Bull who was unbeaten in the foursomes and notched up a good scalp with a win against the Herts player who recently won the U14 Boys Scottish Stroke Play Championship. An excellent performance also from Matteo Di Carlofelice who won a foursome''s match and both his singles with a very disciplined performance.
Result: Herts 9 BB&O 6 Middlesex 9½; BB&O 5½;

| Junior golf the big winner in first U13s matches |
BB&O U13 boys played their first competitive match against Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire on 20h July at Temple Golf Club on a fine Sunday afternoon. All matches were played in fine competitive spirit. Hertfordshire just beat BB&O and the match against Bedfordshire was halved. There were many spectators out on the course supporting our young players. As one of the commentators said; "the ultimate winner is Junior golf"! The scores are available in the Results section of this Junior web site. |

| James Brockington in third place at the McGregor |
| James Brockington (Henley on Thames & County Junior Elite player) earns third place in the McGregor played at High Post near Salisbury. Four solid rounds in sometimes challenging conditions produced cards of 69, 70, 71 and 72. James finished two shots behind the runner up Jamie Carnie (Shirley) and 4 shots behind Workingtons Seb Crookhall-Nixon. Well done James. |
| BB&O's U13s Hewitt & West win in Junior Golf Tour |
| There was quality in depth in the 10 & under age group, so it needed a great round from Damien Hewitt (Bearwood GC) to claim the win with rounds of 77 and 79. The Academy Group played 18 holes and were split into 2 age sections, the 8 & under's and 10-12's, Harry West (Calcot Park GC) was virtually flawless during his wonderful round of 56, just 2 over par, to not only win the 8 & under age group but also card the best round of the day. | U16s v Hertfordshire match report |
A wet and dismal morning reflected the foursomes results with three heavy losses and a single win in the top match by 3 & 1 for James Brockington (Henley) and George Abbott (The Oxfordshire). Herts won the foursomers 3 - 1. James Brockington and George Abbott halved their afternoon singles matches and led a spirted fightback from BB & O. Fibe of the matches went to the eighteenth hole. Unfortunately for BB & O every one of those matches ended positively for Hertfordshire and a close series of matches saw Herts triumph 6.5 -1.5 with an overall score of 9.5 - 2.5. Robert Grant halved his singles match whilst the Newbury and Crookham duo fought and played well but just lost out on the last green.
|
| U16's League win against Bedfordshire |
Wet conditions prevailed in the morning foursomes with some strong victories from James Brockington (Henley) and George Abbott (The Oxfordshire) winning 7 & 5 and James Foster and Chris Neville (both Newbury & Crookham) winning 5 & 4. The Woburn pair of Ben Roche and Ryan Armstrong secured a half point before Robert Grant of Mentmore holed a 30'' putt on the last green to give himself and James Cooper (Wokefield Park) a 1 hole victory and a 3.5 to 0.5 lead for BB & O. The afternoon singles again produced a string of solid victories with BB & O winning 7 - 1 and a 10.5 to 1.5 overall victory.
|
| BB&O Boys come third in the 6 man team |
| After an indifferent morning round, shooting 21 over in the 5 counting scores and putting us in 6th place, the BB&O team really stepped up several gears and returned a cracking 4 over afternoon round which was easily the best score of the whole day! Sadly we came third over all, 7 shots behind the winners Surrey. Eddie Pepperell's level par perfomance over the two rounds won him the David Neech trophy for the best individual score. |
| O'Connor, Richardson, Stubbs, Newbold win the lot |
Steven O'Connor wins the South of England Schools Championship at Lingfield Park with a 5 shot lead. (1 over CSS in a 36 hole comp) in tough conditions on May 28th with Joe Richardson in second place. Steven and Joe with Dean Newbold and Alex Stubbs took the boys team competition winning it for Oxfordshire for the very first time. Steven's handicap reduction (down to 2) also wins him entry into the BB&O Junior Elite squad. The other three are members of the B&O Junior Fast Track squad. Well done guys - keep practising, keep winning!

| B&O v Herts match report (9.5 - 5.5) |
In the morning foursomes the honours were shared with comfortable wins on both sides. The last match, however, saw James Bromham and Mark Kirby (both Richings Park) recover from 5 down with 6 to play to get a halved match on the eighteenth with some excellent short game saves under great pressure. The singles started well with Oli Tite (Frilford) and Michael Johnson (Maidenhead) winning the first two points in commanding fashion. In the end a 7 - 3 win in the singles belied a much tighter match than the score suggests. Asa Phillips (Goring & Streately) lost at the last to a birdie whilst Mark Kirby hung on for a good one hole victory followed by James Bromham and Robert Harrhy (Frilford) with halved matches. Final result 9.5 to BB & O, 5.5 to Hertfordshire. |
| BB&O U18s score emphatic victory over Beds |
| A strong win with extremely good golf in very testing windy conditions. There were many excellent performances with Maidenhead's Michael Johnson taming both the course and his opponent with an emphatic 8 & 6 victory. Good victories by Steven O'Connor, Asa Phillips Joe Richardson, Oli Tite, James Tobia and Robert Harrhy meant that victory was assured before all matches were finished. However Ben Kirby, who looked defeated on the 17th green, continued to fight and turned his match round bravely and eventually triumphed on the 18th green where Dean Newbold courageously holed a difficult nine foot putt to get a gutsy half point. |
| Ben's progress report! |
Just to update you on how I've been playing recently. I played the final of our junior knockout tournament last weekend and won 6 & 5. I was only given two shots. I don't know if I told you but I came runner up in April's medal. In the May medal I finished tied first but finished fourth on countback. I should have won but a silly tee shot on the last sent the ball o.o.b. and I ended up making an 8. I caddied for France yesterday against England and really learnt a lot. I played tonight and tried to put these things into practice and shot level par through 9 holes. This was with 2 birdies and 2 bogies, although one of these bogies was due to a silly 3 putt. Thanks, Ben Beach |
| The Morel case study to hard work and dedication |
Dear Jan, I hope you don't mind me contacting you but my son, James dob 25.02.93 attended the BB&O junior coaching sessions in October and December. He came away with lots of helpful ideas on how to improve his game, including John Cook's recommendation of counting the number of putts on a round and aiming to reduce them. Unfortunately, James did not make it through to the next round but in the letter dated 15.01.08 from John Cook and yourself it said to stay in touch and let you know how James is getting on.
James started off 2008 by winning the Junior competition at Tadmarton. Then during James's three week Easter holidays he played every day apart from one. He has never been more enthusiastic. In the holidays he began with a hole in one on Good Friday(!), won the Ladies' Invite to the juniors competition. He won the two Thursday evening men's stableford competitions with 45 points and 46 points playing to 13hcp and 9hcp. He also came runner up at the OJGL foursomes at Witney Lakes losing out on countback. He has seen his handicap reduce from 25 to 13.
I am sure that the BB&O coaching helped to build his confidence, for which we are very grateful. If any spaces do become available throughout the year (as mentioned in your letter) please bear James in mind.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Julia Morel

| Surrey result does not tell the full story! |
| BB&O fielded an U16 side v Surrey's U18s at Guildford. Joe Richardson and Dean Newbold, once 5 down in the morning foursomes fought back hard to loose on the last hole. Wilson and Roche won their morning foursomes. In the afternoon Richardson won his match and Stubbs and Wilson halved theirs. Surrey's Josh White, who beat Jake Canning 2&1 in the afternoon, reported it was his best match play contest for a very long while. Well done Surrey! |

The Mortimers Ubiquitous Golfing Society's captain reminded the players at the after-match ceremony that MUGS members donate £1 for every ''blob'' on their card which funds days like the annual Surrey v BB&O MUGS match. The conditions were perfect and the greens and course in outstanding conditon - the greens being faster than most players had experienced this year. After a wonderful start for BB&O, our players only managed to win 1 and halve 2 singles matches resulting in a well deserved Surrey win. All players were presented with the traditional sleeve of balls and chrystal mug(!) BB&O will host this match next year at Huntercombe GC. |

Unlike some recent games we were badly down after the morning Foursomes but a fine Singles performance after lunch led to a 9 1/2 to 5 1/2 win against Middx, and a 10 to 5 win against Beds. Unfortunately our draw with Herts, in the previous match gave Hertfordshire the title in the first year of these leagues. Our congratulations go to them and their representative was presented with the new ''U14 Claret Jug'' at the evening meal. Harry Whittle,Sam Williams, Joe Richardson, George Abbott, James Foster and Will Cooper all won both their single matches to help the County sign off 2007 with a fine win. |

| BB&O Recruitment |
Following the appointment of John Cook as Head Coach, the Junior Management will shortly be announcing an exciting new coaching structure.
In the meantime we are looking to recruit new junior managers to assist with the management and supervision of the junior squads. Duties would involve; Attendance at coaching days and match days. Tactical decisions involve team selection and motivation as well as supervising match days. Strategic input requires involvement in planning and shaping the general coaching structure and annual coaching plans.
We operate a flexible programme where other members of the team can stand in on duty days so as not to play havoc with social, family or business obligations.
We are looking for enthusiastic, responsible and level headed amateur golfers who are able to spend between 5 and 10 days (a mix of midweek and weekends) per year. Ideally you are able to look after a squad throughout a year to get to know the players and put together winning teams.
If you are interested then please contact Jan Hubrecht |

| Whittle claims Douglas Johns in thrilling final |
| The Douglas Johns tournament played yesterday at Harewood Downs provided spectators with a spectacle as exciting, dramatic and with as many twists and turns as this year's Open. In an amazing 2 hour climax Harry Whittle (Woburn) had the better of Adam Carson (Long Ashton) at the 4th sudden death hole which came after the initial three extra play off holes. A great credit to both boys for hanging in there with such grit, focus and determination. For more information visit the BB&O main Web site |

Harry Whittle mastered Brunston Castle with a stunning two under round of 70, just one shot shy of the U14 record best round of 69, set by Paul McPhee last year.
Whittle's winning round included 5 birdies at the 7th, 11th, 13th, 15th and 18th - which he almost holed with his second shot. The Woburn Junior Club Champion and current County U14 Champion said after his victory, "I am delighted to have won a title at this level, and it is even more special as it is just down the road from my grandparents and I hope I have made them and my mum proud."
He added, "I really enjoyed playing the course, it was in really good condition and I managed to get back in before the rain got too bad. My bogeys were at the three easy holes really, but overall I was pleased with my game today."

| Ben Cotton's putting earns him the Boddington! |
Fifteen year old Ben Cotton started the year with a handicap of 6.1 at the Wychwood and a year later plays of 2.0 at the Oxfordshire.
A great example of dedication and commitment, Ben decided to focus on putting and his practice included ''downing'' 50 putts from the four points of the compass around the hole. If he missed one he'd start all over again whether it was the 9th or the 49th putt he missed. Practice makes perfect and he won the Boddington Trophy for the most improved junior golfer of 2006.
Roger Eldridge from the Oxfordshire Company of Honourable Golfers presented Ben with his trophy. |
