| Max wins the McEvoy! |
Max Smith (Newbury Race Course & England U18) wins the 2009 Peter McEvoy 5 under par with rounds of 69, 35, 69 and 70, one shot clear from Billy Downing (Truro) with Joshua White (Chipstead) in third place. Heavy thunder reduced the first day's play to 27 holes and steady rain fall on the second day meant greens staff were kept busy keeping the greens free from casual water. Max was observed by an England selector durng the morning round of the second day who reported a near perfect round of golf. As the weather worsened Max's afternoon round got better and better with only 1 geen missed (16th) in the last nine holes, resulting in the only bogey which was immediately followed by a stunning birdie when he pitched the ball 2 inches from the hole on the 17th. A difficult pin position on the last, just over the large green side bunker, had Max play his approach shot pin high to the centre of the green which he nearly birdied too!
In the 28 years of the McEvoy history this is the first time a BB&O boy has won this Junior Major. Max follows in the footsteps of other great winners like Lee Westwood and Justin Rose.
Max is coached by County Academy Coach Matt Woods (Donnington Grove) as is his County Junior Elite colleague Luke Wiliams who won the BB&O Junior Championship last week. |
